COLUMBUS, Ohio --- The state of Ohio has seen an increase in the number of deer-vehicle collisions. In 2006, there were 28,240 such accidents in the state, up 3.3 percent from 2005. Twelve people were killed in last year's accidents -- up from nine in 2005. The Ohio Insurance Institute offers the following advice to minimize the risk of deer-vehicle crashes: ** Drive cautiously, observing the speed limit in areas with deer-crossing signs. ** Be alert, particularly from sunset to midnight and before and after dawn, when most crashes occur. Crashes are most common October through spring. ** If you see one deer, expect others and slow down. ** Use high beams after dark. The reflection from the headlights will help you see the deer's eyes. ** Wear a seat belt. ** Don't swerve to avoid hitting a deer. If you can't avoid a collision, hit it while maintaining control of your car. ** Report collisions to local law enforcement.
