Infiniti will offer a lineup of electrified vehicles that will include several models powered by gasoline, Infiniti has announced.
While the system may sound counterintuitive, it will involve two powertrains built on a new platform. One system will run purely on electricity, while the other will be a gas-generated EV. The vehicles won't have plugs.
Infiniti is planning an all-electric SUV potentially based on the QX Inspiration concept and a luxury sedan with a gas-generated EV drivetrain similar to the Qs Inspiration design study.
The hybrid functionality will be enabled by a new version of Infiniti's variable-compression, turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. The engine won't directly move the wheels. Like the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, it will charge the battery. It could also run the drive motors.
The gas-generated EV could offer a range of 500 miles, according to Infiniti.
