Hyundai's Sonata mid-size sedan will enter the 2016 model year with an upgraded suspension and improved fuel economy for the 2.4-liter engine a year after it received a mid-cycle update.

The 2016 Sonata will also recieve minor styling updates and several other new features, Hyundai has announced. The 2016 Sonata retails for $22,585 for the base model, and is arriving at dealer lots now. The vehicle increases about $620 over the 2015-MY car.

For 2016, the Sonata is also adding automatic emergency braking functionality to models previously equipped with forward collision warning and a 7-inch color touchscreen display audio with Android Auto for SE, Sport, Limited, Eco, and Sport 2.0T models.

Hyundai is adding aluminum suspension components to replace similar steel parts on the 2016 Sonata to reduce weight, which will improve handling, according to Hyundai.

A 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged GDI powers the Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T models with 245 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. A year ago, Hyundai added a smaller turbine and compressor wheel to provide better responsiveness and more torque in the low and middle rpm range. Both Theta engines are paired with a 6-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission.

The Eco model remains the fuel economy champion of the non-hybrid Sonatas with its 1.6-liter turbocharged Gamma four-cylinder that makes 177 hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Eco models receive a 28 mpg EPA fuel economy rating in the city, 38 mpg on the highway, and 32 mpg combined.
