Hyundai Motor Company recently officially inaugurated its first manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia located in the Detamas industrial complex near Cikarang, Indonesia, 25 miles east of the capital city Jakarta.
Completed in December, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia is the first Hyundai facility to produce battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in the region, beginning with the IONIQ-5 all-electric SUV. The plant will also manufacture the CRETA SUV and the newly developed Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) model for the Southeast Asia market.
The South Korean carmaker plans to invest about USD $1.55 billion in the plant, with annual production capacity expected to grow to 250,000 vehicles.
“Indonesia is a key hub for Hyundai Motor’s future mobility strategy,” said Euisun Chung, executive chair, Hyundai Motor Group. “Moreover, Hyundai will keep contributing to the establishment of the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia through the battery cell plant currently under construction.”
Partnering with LG Energy Solution, Hyundai will build a battery cell factory in Karawang, Indonesia, targeted for completion in the first half of 2023 and a production start in 2024. Batteries produced at the factory will support Indonesia’s electric vehicle transition with supply of sustainable EV batteries, according to a company statement.
