The City of Honolulu is moving forward with an initiative to add biodiesel buses to its mass transit fleet, after the City Council approved the initiative on Sept. 10.
The initiative isn't the first one in the city to expand biodiesel use. Since 2004, the city has been integrating the B-20 blend into a large segment of its municipal fleet, including refuse trucks. In 2012, the city began using biodiesel in its fixed route buses.
Each year, Hawaii produces 5.5 MMgy of biodiesel. Pacific Biodiesel is a leading supplier and manages the Big Island Biodiesel refinery, reports Biodiesel Magazine.
