The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently evaluated the re-designed 2019 Ford Ranger crew cab for crashworthiness standing. While the Ranger scored good ratings in five rigorous tests and offered additional crash prevention technologies, it fell short of capturing Top Safety Pick recognition due to its headlights.

Unfortunately, all three available headlight options for the Ranger only received a marginal rating from the Institute’s engineers.

On the upside, the vehicle aced five tests — the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests — earning good scores across the board. The Ranger also earned an acceptable rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test.

In addition, the pickup comes with a standard front crash prevention system that earns a superior rating in IIHS tests. It avoided a collision in the 12 mph test and reduced its speed by an average of 24 mph in the 25 mph test.

While its headlights held it back from a Top Safety Pick award, overall, the 2019 Ford Ranger “SuperCrew” performed well in the IIHS evaluations, notes the Institute.
