As part of its efforts to lessen its litter problems, Harare, Zimbabwe, has improved its refuse collection schedule and has increased its refuse fleet to 48 trucks, according to a report by kubatana.net.

The problem has been compounded due to the decade-long economic crisis affecting the country, according to the report.

In addition, the city is embarking on a number of other initiatives to maintain cleanliness and lessen disease outbreaks. This has included the training of anti-litter monitors who have been tasked to clean up public areas, such as central business districts and parks, twice per week, according to the report.

To date, about 500 people have volunteered and more are expected to be trained.
