GM Sales Forecast Highlights Strong Truck Sales for 2001
General Motors reported the cumulative selling rate for the industry during the first five months of this year at 17.3 million units (8.6 million cars and 8.7 million trucks). That total is still a healthy selling rate and a strong comparison to last year’s record five-month rate of 18.5 million units (9.2 million cars and 9.3 million trucks). The company continues to forecast a full-year industry selling rate of about 16.5 million units for 2001, a selling rate that would be the third best level in industry history. GM was the only domestic automaker to gain sales and share in May. GM had a +0.72 share point change. Ford was down 2.30 and DaimlerChrysler was down 0.91. GM’s truck portfolio has shown sales strength, with May sales reaching an all-time high for GM full-size trucks (pickups and utilities), which climbed 24 percent in total. Separately, full-size pickup sales rose 17 percent and full-size utility sales were up 38 percent.
