General Motors plans to invest an additional $28 million into Holden research and development, according to news.com.au.
Holden transitioned into becoming national sales companies after it ceased manufacturing in Australia roughly four years ago. It also retained a design and engineering workforce of 350 people workign on developing technologies for a local and global level. As part of this transition, the company made a $120 million commitment to automotive research in Australia.
As part of this new investment, the company will also add an additional 150 engineering and design jobs at its Holden Port Melbourne facility, bringing total engineering and design staff in Australia over 500.
A large portion of the research conducted at the Holden facility revolves around autonomous driving. The additional financial support is meant to further cement the company’s commitment to advancing that technology.
