GM Funds $10 Million Study on How Electronics Distract Drivers
General Motors Corp., deflecting criticism from safety advocates as it rolls out new electronic devices in its autos, is launching a consumer education campaign about the dangers of driver distractions. The automaker will spend $10 million to study how phones and other electronic devices distract motorists. The three-year “SenseAble Driving” campaign begins this fall in Michigan. It will go nationwide next year. GM will distribute educational materials, air public service ads and launch a Web site. The automaker says consumers are demanding greater access to technology in cars without sacrificing safety. But the growing use of mobile phones by drivers and fledgling efforts to equip new cars and trucks with Internet access and other electronics have raised concerns among safety groups and lawmakers. The campaign comes as GM plans an aggressive roll out of OnStar, a service that uses cellular communications and global satellites to track stolen vehicles, unlock car doors and provide travel directions.
