Freightliner, the U.S. subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler AG, is introducing a new “Business Class M2 series truck. The new series replaces the previous “Business Class,” which was first introduced in 1991. Over the next two years, Freightliner will introduce numerous Business Class M2 configurations that will offer commercial truck applications such as local and regional dis-tribution, food and beverage delivery, utilities, government services, towing, and other applications. First, Freightliner is roling out the 106-inch BBC (bumper-to-back-of-cab) configuration. Extended cabs and crew cabs wil be available in late 2002. A 100-inch BBC model and a 112-inch BBC model will be available in 2003. For the first time, Freightliner is using Mercedes-Benz major assemblies, such as engines and transmissions, as standard equipment. The 4.3L MBE 900 engine is standard in the 106-inch BBC Business Class M2. The in-line 4-cylinder turbo-charged MBE 900 engine is rated from 150 to 180 hp with peak torque of 520 lb.-ft. at 1,250 rpm. The 6.4L 6-cylinder MBE 900 engine is available as an option. The 106-inch BBC is also available with 6-speed Mercedes-Benz manual transmissions featuring hy-draulically actuated clutch systems. The direct-drive MBT520S-6D is for trucks up to 40,000 pounds GCW. The over-drive MBT660S-60 is for trucks up to 60,000 GCW. The new Business Class M2 will make its public debut at the Mid America Trucking Show in Louis-ville, KY March 21-23, 2002. Freightliner will begin taking orders for the 106-inch BBC models immediately. Limited production will begin in June 2002 at the Mt. Holly plant in North Carolina.
