Ford Issues 2 More '13 Escape Recalls

Ford Motor Co. has reported two additional recalls of its 2013 Escape compact SUV, after reports of fires in 13 more vehicles.
The latest recalls announced Tuesday bring the total number of recalls on the 2013 Escape to seven. Five involve fire risks on models equipped with a 1.6L engine. Some of the vehicles were part an earlier recall, and Ford determined that technicians may have incorrectly repaired fuel lines, which leak after chafing.
For the fuel-line chafing issue, Ford is recalling 9,469 Escape SUVs built between Oct. 5, 2011 and July 11, 2012, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The larger of the two new recalls affects 139,917 vehicles globally. In this recall, the engine cylinder head may overheat, causing cracks that could allow oil to leak. The vehicles were manufactured between Oct. 5, 2011 and June 2.
For the larger recall, Ford dealers will modify the engine shielding, cool and control systems at no charge. For the lesser recall, dealers will inspect the engine compartment fuel line and replace it if necessary. The recalls will begin Jan. 23. Owners can contact Ford at (866) 436-7332.
Fleet buyers registered 70,898 Ford Escape SUVs in fleets in calendar-year 2012, including 45,924 in rental, 22,699 in commercial, and 2,275 in government fleets.
