Driver Faces $15,000 Fine for Going Through Toll Booths Without Paying

Wesley Ridgwell is facing a $15,000 fine for going through 705 toll booths without paying, unless a hearing officer throws out the government’s case. Authorities say that 705 photos were taken by automatic cameras of Ridgwell’s late-model Honda bearing his Virginia vanity plate “JST CRZY” running through toll booths between August 1999 and June of this year. Ridgwell, who has convictions including speeding and drunken driving, says one of his two license plates was stolen and put on a car similar to his. But authorities say that a police officer once stopped a car with a “JST CRZY” plate for not paying a toll, with Ridgwell behind the wheel. Investigators took months to track Ridgwell down because he didn’t change his address when he moved to Florida. Further evidence strengthening the authorities’ case is that during two seven-day periods the “JST CRZY” plate wasn’t captured by cameras running through central Florida toll booths. Virginia officials and court records say that, during those periods, Ridgwell was serving a 14-day sentence in Roanoke County Jail for speeding. But Ridgwell says he was out of the country at the time.
