DaimlerChrysler Corp. to Sell Zero-Emission Neighborhood Electric Vehicles
DaimlerChrysler Corp. has expanded its lineup of zero-emission vehicles by purchasing the assets and business of Global Electric MotorCars LLC (GEM) of Fargo, ND. Specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed. GEM is the largest producer in the U.S. of electric vehicles that can be licensed for use on public roads. With the purchase, DaimlerChrysler becomes the first automaker to sell neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) in the United States. GEM will produce more than 5,000 vehicles this year. It offers a product lineup that includes two-passenger and four-passenger models, as well as two utility vehicles. DaimlerChrysler’s NEV operations will be conducted through a wholly owned subsidiary. NEVs have a maxumum speed of 25 mph and are certified for operation on roads posted at 35 mph or less. Thrity-two states presently have approved the use of NEVs, and the state of California certifies the vehicles as zero-emission vehicles. NEVs are currently in use at military bases, resorts, university campuses, and in planned communities, industrial settings, and cities.
