CLARKSVILLE, TN --- A $45,000 federal grant will help the city of Clarksville, TN, produce biodiesel for the city's utilities department and transit buses.

CLARKSVILLE, TN --- A $45,000 federal grant will help the city of Clarksville, TN, produce biodiesel for the city's utilities department and transit buses.

The grant will help purchase equipment that can make biodiesel fuel using used cooking oil as a feedstock. Jim Hall, city transportation planner, told TheLeaf-Chronicle newspaper that use of the biodiesel will improve local air quality and also recycle grease that might otherwise flow into the city's sewer system.

City wastewater manager David Hoffman said Clarksville has identified 95 restaurants that can produce 1,300 gallons of used cooking oil weekly.
