BMW has updated its i3 electric hatchback so it can now travel 114 miles on a single charge for a more than 40% increase from the prior model that provided an EPA-rated 81 miles of range.
The 2017 BMW i3 (94 Ah) will be equipped with a 33-kWh battery compared with the 22-kWh battery on the original vehicle. The battery size remains the same, but the capacity increases by 50% due to higher density of battery cells, according to BMW. The Ah stands for ampere hours.
The 2017 i3 can deliver the 114 miles with "varying weather conditions and with the air conditioning or heating turned on," according to BMW.
BMW will also offer its range-exteded i3 with the new battery.
Charging times will increase slightly for the vehicle. A Level 2 charge will now take 4.5 hours compared to 3.5 hours for the prior model.
