PHOENIX, Ariz. --- Arizona state representatives voted this week to repeal a law they recently passed that requires motorists convicted of any drunk driving offense to install ignition interlock devices. Governor Janet Napolitano has already signed the bill requiring ignition interlocks. The law was approved last month by near-unanimous votes, according to Capital Media Services. The law is scheduled to take effect 90 days after the legislative session ends, unless the new amendment to SB 1582 becomes law and overrides the previous vote. Representative John Kavanagh (R-Fountain Hills) said the information offered to the representatives prior to the original vote was incomplete and in some cases inaccurate. He said the bill had been rushed through without proper debate. Representative Pete Rios (D-Hayden), who also voted for the repeal, said that only 8 percent of those convicted of drunk driving commit the offense again. State law had already required interlocks on vehicles driven by people convicted of multiple drunk driving offenses along with those who had a blood alcohol level of at least 0.15, which is considered extreme drunk driving.
