Global online retail giant Amazon will launch an e-cargo bike fleet and an on-foot staff dispatched from its first UK micromobility hub, for more sustainable deliveries in Central London.
Replacing thousands of traditional van trips on London roads, the bike fleet and walkers, with Amazon’s existing electric vans, will make some 5 million deliveries annually across more than 10% of London’s ultra-low emission zone, where a fee is charged for driving the most polluting vehicles.
The new micromobility hub in London’s Hackney borough is the first of similar delivery hubs planned around the UK this year as part of its efforts to cut carbon emissions.
To help meet its goal to deliver 50% of shipments with net-zero carbon by 2030, Amazon announced plans to install large-sale solar panel installations at several UK facilities.
The company will also add nine electric heavy-goods vehicles to its delivery fleet by the end of the year. The 37-ton vehicles are among the first in the UK and the first in Amazon’s fleet to replace traditional diesel trucks.
