$50,000 Raised for Red Cross at NAAA Convention
The National Auto Auction Association (NAAA) held an auction during its annual convention on Oct. 2-7, 2001, in San Francisco that raised $50,000 for the American Red Cross relief efforts, including aid to victims and survivors of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. During the final night of the convention, a Honda XR250 motorcycle, donated by Tom Kniivila of VW-Audi Finance and Auction Broadcasting Co. (ABC), was auctioned by NAAA’s Chairman of the Board Kenny Osborn and President Ray Nichols to create funds to benefit the American Red Cross. The auction is referred to as a “Chinese auction” where anyone bidding would surrender their funds and the motorcycle was repeatedly donated back to the association for further auctioning. The motorcycle was auctioned off four times, with the final tally coming to $43,400. ABC added another $6,600 to make a grand total of $50,000. Additional bidders and donators included: Ellie Johnson, Manheim’s Aycock Auto Auction, Kenly, NC; Patty Stanley, Carolina Auto Auction, Anderson, SC; Gary Gilley, Manheim’s San Di-ego Auto Auction, Oceanside, CA; Tom Caruso, ADESA; Bill Arnold and Greg Gehman, Manheim Auto Auction, Manheim, PA; and Jay Cadigan, Manheim’s Skyline Auto Exchange, Fairfield, NJ.
