The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently gave the 2018 Hyundai Kona good ratings after putting the SUV through five rigorous crashworthiness tests.
Specifically, the Kona performed well during the driver-side small overlap, moderate overlap, side, roof strength and head restraint test — earning good ratings in all of those trials. The SUV can also claim superior front crash prevention, according to IIHS.
However, the SUV failed to capture IIHS’ acclaimed Top Safety Pick award due only to the fact that its headlights have a poor rating, noted IIHS. The base halogen lights provide inadequate visibility, and the LED lights that come on with higher trim levels produce too much glare.
The Kona has not been evaluated for passenger-side small overlap protection.
