ROUSH CleanTech: Three Years of Steady Growth

Officially founded in 2010, ROUSH CleanTech offers 14 vehicle models and has grown from its start of six employees to a current total of 80.

ROUSH CleanTech was started by noted performance engineer and motorsports legend Jack Roush in 2010. He began his automotive career at Ford Motor Co. in 1964, assembling Ford’s iconic Mustang. Roush applied his passion for performance and focus on success to create Roush Enterprises and its subsidiaries.

Throughout the years, Roush Enterprises has invested millions of its corporate dollars researching all alternative fuels. In 2006, Jack Roush received a $1.2 million grant from the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) for development of a liquid propane autogas fuel system for the Ford F-150 truck.

“Since our inception, we’ve focused on three things: providing the very best quality, performance, and service for our customers,” said Todd Mouw, vice president of sales and marketing for ROUSH CleanTech. “With more than 4,000 units sold and more on order, we continue to attract fleet managers in new industries.”

In 2010, Roush Enterprises officially expanded to include ROUSH CleanTech by offering vehicles fueled by propane autogas. Jack Roush serves as the chairman of the board.

Offering a Wide Breadth of Products

While Roush Enterprises has been in operation for more than 30 years, ROUSH CleanTech was officially founded in 2010. Today, the Livonia, Mich.-headquartered company has grown from its start with just six employees to 80.

ROUSH CleanTech has experienced steady growth, from its start of just 105 sales in 2010 to 4,000 units sold in 2013.

ROUSH CleanTech designs, engineers, manufactures, and installs propane autogas fuel system technology for light- and medium-duty Ford commercial vehicles, as well as Type A Micro Bird and Type C Blue Bird school buses. As a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM)-certified alternative-fuel vehicle manufacturer, ROUSH CleanTech delivers economical, clean and domestically produced fueling options for fleets across the country, according to the company.

The first vehicle the company started with was the Ford F-150, and its portfolio has expanded due to demand for its product.

“ROUSH CleanTech was ahead of the curve when it comes to developing alternative-fuel technologies,” Mouw said. “While many companies were just beginning to think about entering the market for alternative fuels, we were putting ROUSH-manufactured alt-fuel vehicles on the road.”

Examples of this are the ROUSH CleanTech Ford F-650 and Ford F-59 stripped chassis powered by propane autogas.

“Ford continues to show leadership in the alternative-fuel industry by providing gaseous fuel-prepped engine options that allow us to design, engineer and manufacture more and more propane autogas product offerings,” said Mouw. “A growing number of fleets are choosing vehicles fueled by propane autogas, because they are faced with corporate sustainability goals, soaring fuel costs, and a desire to cut ties with foreign oil.”

ROUSH CleanTech currently offers a total of 14 propane-autogas-powered products, including:

  • Ford F-250/F-350 pickup trucks.

  • Ford E-150/E-250/E-350 vans and wagons.

  • Ford E-450 cutaways.

  • Ford E-450 stripped chassis.

  • Ford F-59 stripped chassis.

  • Ford F-53 stripped chassis.

  • Ford F-450/F-550 chassis cabs.

  • Ford F-650 chassis cabs.

  • Blue Bird Propane-Powered Vision Type C school buses.

  • Micro Bird G5 Type A school buses.

Ensuring Consistent Growth

ROUSH CleanTech has been taking its growth and expansion seriously, according to Mouw. For every 100 vehicles sold, the company creates another job at headquarters or in the supply chain. It is also an active member of 30 Clean Cities Coalitions.

“At only three years old, ROUSH CleanTech has grown from a six-person operation sharing space with ROUSH Performance to an expanding company of 80 employees filling its own 64,000-square-foot building,” Mouw said.

In January 2013, the company relocated to a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. In addition to manufacturing “clean” products, ROUSH CleanTech’s environmental program includes the use of clean building materials and practices, such as recycled carpet and furniture, low volatile organic compounds (VOC) paints and adhesives and Energy Star appliances; trash compacting, which has reduced waste at a 3:1 rate; recycling; vehicle sharing; and more.

Looking toward the future, the company plans to launch propane autogas powered Ford Transit vans and wagons in 2014.
