The human side of the fleet is what makes the industry.

Stories outside of the numbers measured in cost, uptime, and safety are what bring careers to life. Automotive Fleet wants to highlight this with an interview-driven series that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the leaders who shape the fleet world.

This week's Fleet Meets guest is Karyna Zarate, former AFLA president and industry specialist.

Meet Karyna Zarate

AF: What’s your professional background, and how did you get involved with fleet?

Zarate: I am an experienced fleet manager specializing in heavy equipment operations, maintenance optimization, safety compliance, and cost-efficient fleet management. I am known for supporting project success through strategic planning and strong field leadership. My interest in fleet management began with a hands-on exposure to operations and logistics in fast-paced work environments where efficiency, safety, and reliability directly impacted results. What started as a practical understanding of vehicles and equipment quickly evolved into a passion for optimizing systems, improving performance, and building smarter operational processes.

AF: What do you love about the industry?

Zarate: I love that fleet sits at the intersection of people, operations, and strategy. It’s where planning meets real-world impact – every decision directly affects safety, productivity, and performance. There is a deep sense of purpose in knowing that well-managed fleets and equipment keep crews working, projects moving, and communities being built.

AF: What’s your biggest piece of life advice?

Zarate: Money will come back to you; time doesn’t. Spend wisely.

AF: What are your hobbies outside of work?

I really enjoy painting with watercolors, which allows me to work on my visual storytelling and attention to detail outside of work. Another one of my favorite ways to unwind is taking my three dogs on long walks and
staying active outdoors. That has taught me a lot about discipline and managing stress.

AF: If you were an animal, what type of animal would you be?

Zarate: If I were an animal, I would be part of a pack, so I would say a lioness. I value strong leadership and am determined, so as a lioness, I'd be dedicated to my pack. And occasionally, I enjoy a long nap in the sun.

AF: What was the best part of being AFLA president?

Zarate: The most rewarding part of being AFLA president is serving the fleet community. I loved the opportunity to bring people together around a shared mission and help shape the organization's long-term vision. For me, it is deeply fulfilling to represent others' interests and help drive positive outcomes.
