The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently honored the redesigned 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan with a 2019 Top Safety Pick award when the car is equipped with optional curve-adaptive headlights.

The small car met all the criteria for capturing a Top Safety Pick, but fell short of the higher-tier Top Safety Pick+ status, as its base headlights earned only a marginal rating from IIHS engineers.

However, the Corolla aced a series of six rigorous crash tests — earning good ratings across the board.

These included the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraint tests, and passenger-side small overlap front test.

In addition, the Corolla comes with a standard superior-rated front crash prevention system — another important factor qualifying it for Top Safety Pick status.

Toyota's Corolla is available as both a sedan and a hatchback. The Corolla hatchback, which was new for 2019, was previously recognized by IIHS with a Top Safety Pick award.
