Volvo Cars is recalling nearly 46,000 2018-2019 Volvo XC60 vehicles for an issue with the tailgate lift arms. Specifically, under certain conditions and in cold temperatures, the tailgate lifting arms may freeze, which can potentially result in the arms disengaging from the vehicle.

In the event the tailgate lifting arms separate from the vehicle, they could project rearward with significant force, increasing the chance of injury.

To fix the problem, Volvo notified owners on Jan. 31, and dealers will replace the tailgate lift arms with an improved design, at no cost to owners. Volvo will mail a second letter to owners once the parts are available.

Owners can reach Volvo customer service at (800) 458-1552. Volvo's reference number for this recall is R89910.
