Geotab has acquired FleetCarma, a Canadian telematics company that specializes in the management of electrified vehicles, the telematics provider announced at its Geotab Connect conference in Toronto today.

FleetCarma has been providing fleet management software and its C2 plug-and-play OBD-II device to help fleets manage their battery-electric and plug-in electric hybrid vehicles since its founding in 2007. FleetCarma is based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

FleetCarma' chief executive, Matt Stevens, said telematics will play an important role in fleet adoption of EVs in the near term.

"Successful adoption of EVs requires telematics," Stevens told conference attendees. "There are three moments including procurement, operation, and charging, where telematics can help."

Geotab, which is based in Oakville, Ontario, plans to incorporate the company's product offerings into its own suite of services. The company expects increasing adoption of electrified vehicles in government and commercial fleets in the next few years, said Neil Cawse, Geotab's chief executive.

"Geotab's long-standing commitment to sustainability and innovation is further amplified by the acquisition of FleetCarma," said Cawse said. "We are excited to expand our presence in the EV space and offer our current and future customers a reliable telematics solution to help meet their changing business and fleet needs."

FleetCarma's customers are primarily utility fleets in North America and Europe who are using their products to better understand and manage the impact that EV charging has on the electric grid, according to Geotab.
