Volvo has developed new autonomous parking technology, which is capable of finding and parking in a vacant space by itself, without the driver inside. The technology uses sensors in the vehicle to find and navigate its way to an open parking space.
It combines autonomous driving with detection technology and automatic braking, enabling the vehicle to avoid accidents with other cars and pedestrians in a parking lot. The technology also adjusts speed and braking in a parking lot environment.
Although autonomous parking in a production model is still a ways off, the automaker plans to introduce autonomous steering in the all-new Volvo XC90, set to be revealed at the end of 2014.
Volvo has been involved in development autonomous driving technology and participated in the SARTRE project in Europe in 2012, which successfully demonstrated “platooning,” where a vehicle with a driver leads a group of autonomous vehicles.
Distracted driving remains one of the most persistent risks in fleet operations. New approaches focus on removing mobile device use entirely while adding real-time safety support.
