The U.S. Postal Service has begun delivering bottled water, fresh fish, and electronics in New York City as it begins a shift toward same-day delivery to compete with FedEx, UPS, and Amazon.com.
The move is being led by Megan Brennan, the new postmaster general, to make the quasigovernmental agency more competitive, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Brennan has asked Congress to approve the shipping of alcoholic beverages and wants to expand grocery delivery and Sunday delivery.
Volume of first-class mail is falling sharply with a 20-percent decline over the past decade. Volume fell 2.2 percent through the first three quarters of the year. The USPS reported a $586 million net loss in the third quarter, along with a 13.4-percent increase in package revenue.
