Roughly 10% of used vehicles sold at AutoNation dealerships have an unrepaired safety recall.

That’s the finding of a recent survey from the U.S. PIRG Education Fund, Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety Foundation, and Frontier Group.

The survey — which was conducted during July and August of 2019 — looked at 2,429 AutoNation vehicles and found that 285 (one in nine) had unrepaired safety recalls. Vehicles that were labeled as certified pre-owned were also found to have unrepaired recalls.

The survey focused on AutoNation, but it acknowledged that this is something that is happening across the industry.

The severity of the recalls varied, but the report cited that all recalls can pose a safety hazard. Two of the most severe recalls found during this survey were Takata airbag recalls and General Motors ignition switches.
