U.S. traffic deaths fell 4.2 percent in the first six months of 2013, according to preliminary data released Wednesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

U.S. traffic deaths fell 4.2 percent in the first six months of 2013, according to preliminary data released Wednesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The federal safety agency said 15,470 people dies in motor vehicle crashes through June 30, down from the 16,150 fatalities that occurred in the first half of 2012.
The fatality rate for the first six months of 2013 decreased to 1.06 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, down from 1.10 fatalities per 100 million miles in the first half of 2012.
In 2012, traffic deaths rose 4.4 percent to 33,780 after seven years of declining. In 2005, 43,510 people were killed on U.S. roads. Read the full report here.
