XATA Corp., a provider of onboard fleet management systems for private fleet transportation, announced that the United States Postal Service (USPS) has specified XATA's OpCenter® system in its 2004 cargo van purchase. The purchase was approved by the USPS Board of Governors in November and includes an estimated 1,800 XATA systems. XATA has received the initial order from Freightliner LLC, a DaimlerChrysler Company, for 250 systems. XATA expects to deliver these systems throughout 2004. The USPS delivers mail to 134 million addresses with a growth rate of 1.8 million addresses per year. With more than 200 billion pieces delivered annually, the USPS delivers approximately 40 percent of the world's card and letter mail volume. To manage this volume the USPS operates a transport and delivery fleet of 208,601 vehicles driving approximately 1.14 billion miles a year. Cargo vans are used to transport mail from processing centers to delivery units in larger cites. "We selected XATA based on the success of our current installations," said Chuck Speelman, Transportation Specialist for the USPS. The USPS currently operates XATA's OpCenter system on approximately 500 vehicles at over 80 sites.
