TOKYO, JAPAN - Toyota Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. have reached a licensing agreement in which Toyota will supply Mazda with the hybrid technology used in the Toyota Prius.
Mazda said it plans to combine the hybrid system with its own next-generation Sky engine, now under development, to build a hybrid vehicle in Japan. Mazda hopes to begin sales of a hybrid vehicle starting in Japan by 2013.
Since 1997, when Toyota began sales of the Prius, Toyota has produced over 2.3 million hybrid vehicles for delivery to customers in over 70 countries and regions.
Mazda said it aims to increase by 30 percent the average fuel economy of Mazda vehicles sold globally by 2015, compared to its 2008 level.
