On July 15, Toyota Motor Corporation announced that a line to produce V-6 engines would be added to its Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Inc., (TMMAL) plant. Production will begin in mid-2005, increasing the plant’s annual capacity to 250,000 units. TMMAL was established in June 2001 to build 4.7L V-8 engines for the Tundra full-size pickup truck. It began production in April 2003, with a capacity of 120,000 units. Currently, TMMAL employs 350 people. The V-6 line will mean approximately 150 more jobs and an additional investment of $20 million. The engines will be used in the U.S.-built Tundra and the U.S.- and Mexico-built Tacoma pickup truck. The added production capacity will increase Toyota’s overall North American engine production capacity to 1.29 million units per year.
