Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. will help establish a program to promote a fuel-cell hybrid-electric vehicle community in California, reports Automotive Intelligence News. The goal of the Toyota program is to link government, education and industry, including providers of hydrogen refueling infrastructure, to advance fuel cell transportation development. Set to commence in December 2002, the program will coincide with the delivery of the first two Toyota hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to the University of California campuses at Irvine (UCI) and Davis (UCD). The universities are leaders in fuel cell and infrastructure research, and will lease the vehicles for 30 months, at a cost of approximately $10,000 per month. The two Toyota FCVH models are based on the Highlander mid-size sport/utility vehicle platform, which have undergone extensive on-road testing in Japan and California over the past 16 months.
