T-Mobile plans to create its own 5G cellular network once it gains approval from the Federal Communications Commission to merge with Sprint, which could eventually help enable smart cities, autonomous driving, and other high-bandwidth applications.

While T-Mobile would start by rolling out 5G for residential users as a way to support 4K streaming video content, the network would eventually benefit commercial users. Verizon began rolling out its 5G network late last year.

"If there's ever been an industry more in need of disruption than wireless, it's the Cableopoly," CEO John Legere wrote in a blog post. "So we are going to change it the same way we changed wireless! Aggressive prices, rapid innovation, listening to customers and fixing what’s broken. That’s just what we do – we are not going to simply do more of what the other guys do."

T-Mobile explains its plans in more detail in an FCC filing, which is no longer available.
