Subaru Recall Tied to Faulty Remote Engine Starter Fobs
Subaru is recalling certain 2010-2012 model-year Legacy and Outback vehicles, 2012-2013-MY Impreza vehicles and 2013-MY XV Crosstrek vehicles – all of which are equipped with an automatic or CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory.
Subaru of America is recalling certain 2010-2012 model-year Legacy and Outback vehicles, 2012-2013-MY Impreza vehicles and 2013-MY XV Crosstrek vehicles – all of which are equipped with an automatic or CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory, NHTSA reported on its website.
Also included in this recall are certain 2013 model-year Legacy and Outback vehicles that may have received replacement RES fobs. The recall covers more than 47,400 vehicles.
If the RES fob is dropped, it may malfunction and randomly transmit an engine start request without anyone pressing the button. The engine may inadvertently start and run for up to 15 minutes. The engine may continue to start and stop until the fob battery power is depleted, or until the vehicle runs out of fuel. If the vehicle is parked in an enclosed area, any resulting carbon monoxide buildup poses a health risk.
To remedy the problem, Subaru dealers will replace the RES key fobs, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of April. Vehicle owners can reach Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information.
