Netherlands-based international automaker Stellantis will remake its Turin, Italy, factory into an electric-vehicle (EV) center, a move to increase efficiency as it shifts to selling more EVs, according to a recent Automotive News Europe report.
At Mirafiori plant — the historic center of Fiat — Stellantis will engineer a new electrified platform to build Maserati sedans between 2022 and 2024. The factory already produces the Fiat New 500 battery-electric minicar as well as the Maserati Levante SUV.
Manufacture of the Maserati Ghilbli and Quatroporte sedans will also be transferred to Mirafiori.
Formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group earlier this year, Stellantis will run one manufacturing process to make combustion engines, hybrids, and electric powertrains.
“Stellantis is working with determination and alacrity to anticipate and prepare for the energy transition of all its Italian industrial sites,” the company said in a statement. “The goal is to improve performance at the plants “to give this country a strategic role among the group’s main domestic European markets.”
