Some parts of the country are experiencing their lowest temperatures in decades, thanks to a weather pattern that meteorologists are describing as a “polar vortex.” Meanwhile, in many regions, snowplow crews are working frantically to clear roads.
Here are five simple tips, compiled by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, on how to share the road with snowplow trucks. You may want to pass this advice along to your fleet drivers as a friendly reminder.
During harsh winter weather, always check road conditions in advance.
Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.
Stay back at least five car lengths behind the plow, far from the snow cloud. Snowplow operators will pull over when it’s safe to do so to allow traffic build-up to pass.
Stay alert for snowplows that turn or exit frequently and often with little warning. They may also travel over centerlines or partially in traffic to further improve road conditions.
Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions. Snowplows typically move at slower speeds.
