The request was made in the aftermath of Toyota's major recalls, but the study will examine electronic systems across the auto industry. The NAS advises the government on scientific matters.
The study will begin in July and is expected to span 15 months. Dr. Louis Lanzerotti of the New Jersey Institute of Technology will lead the panel.
Distracted driving remains one of the most persistent risks in fleet operations. New approaches focus on removing mobile device use entirely while adding real-time safety support.
