WASHINGTON, D.C. --- Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has called for a safety assessment of roads in Nassau and Suffolk counties because of a high occurence of fatal accidents there. Spurred by a string of accidents this week, Schumer on Wednesday asked the state Department of Transportation to request a road safety audit from the Federal Highway Administration. According to a report in Newsday, an 18-hour series of accidents began Sunday night. First, a charter bus crashed on the Northern State Parkway in Roslyn Heights. Then on Monday a motorcyclist died in Holbrook, and a teenager died when her vehicle hit a bus in Blue Point. That same day, a tractor-trailer hit a disabled SUV on the side of the Long Island Expressway. Fortunately, a family of three survived that crash. Road safety audits can help create roadway designs that reduce the number and severity of crashes. Schumer has asked auditors to review Long Island's most dangerous roadways. These include Sunrise Highway, Hempstead Turnpike and the Southern State Parkway.
