Ram Revives ProMaster City Compact Commercial Van

Returning after a three-year absence, the 2027 Ram ProMaster City targets small and midsize fleet applications with increased cargo space, updated safety technology, and a starting price expected under $40,000.

Ram is re-entering the compact commercial van segment with the launch of the 2027 Ram ProMaster City, bringing back a vehicle it discontinued in 2022.

The new ProMaster City, previewed during a media briefing on March 4 and officially revealed at NTEA Work Truck Week 2026, is designed to serve small businesses and fleet customers who need a maneuverable urban work van capable of hauling tools, cargo, or passengers.

Compared with the previous-generation model, the newProMaster City has grown in size and capability while maintaining dimensions designed for dense urban environments. The updated model offers more cargo and payload capacity while still fitting in most standard parking garages.

Ram executives said the return of the ProMaster City fills a gap in the brand’s commercial lineup, following the original model's departure from the market three years ago.

“We didn’t do right by our customers when we discontinued the old ProMaster City,” said Matt Huber, senior vice president of Ram product. “It left a hole in the Ram Professional lineup and took a tool away from our dealers, our upfitters, and our customers.”

When the new ProMaster City arrives in early 2027, Ram executives say it will be the only mid-size commercial van available in the U.S. market.

“When the new ProMaster City arrives at dealerships early next year, it will be the only mid-size commercial van on sale in the U.S.,” said Tim Kuniskis, head of North American brands. “Despite our unique market position, Ram Professional isn’t coasting; we’re raising the competitive bar and delivering on small business expectations.”

A Segment Returning After Industry Exit

The compact commercial van segment once included multiple manufacturers but largely disappeared in the U.S. market over the past decade due to regulatory and market challenges.

Despite those exits, Ram said demand remains strong. Since 2009, nearly 1 million small and midsize vans have been sold in the United States, with more than half still in service today. At its peak, the segment sold more than 100,000 vehicles annually, representing a roughly $4 billion market opportunity.

Ram said more than 75% of these vans are used by fleets or small businesses, including trades such as electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, as well as last-mile delivery services and mobile service operations.

In the absence of compact vans, many fleets have turned to larger cargo vans, pickup trucks with caps, or even passenger minivans to fill the role.

Vehicle Designed for Urban Commercial Work

The new ProMaster City is designed specifically for North American commercial applications while maintaining the maneuverability fleets need for urban routes.

The van measures just under 77 inches in height, allowing it to fit in most parking garages and structures while still providing a generous cargo area.

Ram said the van offers more than 2,000 pounds of payload capacity and can tow approximately 2,000 pounds with an available Class 3 trailer hitch.

Inside the cargo area, the van provides 167 cubic feet of cargo volume with a nearly 111-inch load floor. More than 48 inches of space between the rear wheel wells allows the van to carry two standard pallets end-to-end. The cargo area can also accommodate common construction materials such as 4-by-8 sheets of plywood or drywall.

The vehicle is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine producing 166 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

The powertrain is intended to balance efficiency with the torque required for commercial applications. Ram describes the van’s capability as able to “haul a ton and tow a ton,” referring to its payload and towing targets.

Multiple Configurations for Fleets

Ram will offer the ProMaster City in both cargo and passenger versions with several seating configurations.

The cargo model is available as a two-seat work van, while passenger variants offer five-passenger and eight-passenger layouts. Passenger versions feature removable second- and third-row seating, allowing fleets to convert the vehicle between passenger transport and cargo hauling.

Ram also offers multiple rear door options, including traditional rear swing doors that open up to 180 degrees for easier loading or dock access. An available rear liftgate offers an alternative configuration that provides a covered workspace and improves rear visibility.

Ram said the van will be offered in two trim levels: a work-focused Tradesman model and a higher-content SLT trim.

The SLT trim adds features such as body-color bumpers, fog lamps, front parking sensors, and a wireless phone charger.

Ram executives expect most fleet buyers to select the Tradesman configuration.

Built on the Global Stellantis Platform

The ProMaster City is built on Stellantis’ global midsize commercial van architecture, which supports commercial vehicles used around the world and has accumulated billions of miles of operation.

The van uses a front-wheel-drive unibody platform designed to improve structural rigidity while reducing overall weight and parts complexity. For fleets, that architecture allows a flat cargo floor and increased payload capacity while improving traction in poor weather.

Ram will assemble the ProMaster City at Stellantis’ TOFAS manufacturing facility in Bursa, Turkey. Additional upfitting will take place at the company’s Baltimore Transformation Center.

The van will be sold across North America, including the United States and Canada.

Safety and Technology Updates

The new ProMaster City introduces additional driver-assistance technology compared with the previous model.

Standard safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, Driver Attention Alert, rear parking sensors, automatic headlamps with high beams, and a digital rearview mirror

Inside the cabin, the van includes a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Heated front seats, steering-wheel audio controls, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering column are also standard.

Targeting Affordability for Fleet Customers

Ram said affordability was a major focus in the vehicle’s development.

The company is targeting a starting price below $40,000, positioning the ProMaster City as one of the lowest-cost commercial vans in the U.S. market.

Orders for the new van are expected to open in the second half of 2026, with production starting later that year and vehicles arriving at dealerships in the first quarter of 2027.

Ram said the launch timeline is intended to give upfitters time to develop shelving systems, cargo management solutions, and other equipment before vehicles reach fleet customers.
