QUANTUM Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc. announced that it has supplied a hydrogen fuel storage and delivery system for General Motors' Hy-wire, a drivable fuel cell and by-wire vehicle. GM released first pictures of the drivable concept vehicle on Aug. 14, 2002, and it will be intro-duced to the public at the Paris Auto Show Sept. 26, 2002. According to the company, the Hy-wire is General Motors' major step forward in their efforts to reinvent the automobile. QUANTUM's challenge on this project was to design its ultra-lightweight, advanced-composite TriShield hydrogen tank design to fit within the very tight packaging envelope of GM's Hy-wire skateboard-like chassis, which has a maximum depth of 11 inches. QUANTUM's 5,000 psi (pounds per square inch, or 350 bar) hydrogen fuel storage system fits within an area designed to incorporate all of the touring sedan's propulsion and control systems.
