Progressive Corp. Transitions to More Fuel-Efficient Vehicles

MAYFIELD, OH - The Progressive Corp. has been able to make its company fleet "greener" by replacing its larger, gas-consuming vehicles with four-cylinder models.

MAYFIELD, OH - The Progressive Corp., one of the largest auto insurers in the U.S., has been able to make its company fleet "greener" by replacing its larger, gas-consuming vehicles with more fuel-efficient models.

In 2008, The Progressive Corp. began looking at ways it could make the 3,500 vehicles in its company fleet more environmentally friendly. About 3,000 are used by the company's claims department, and in the past, were comprised primarily of six-cylinder Ford Explorers.

Wanda Shippy, Progressive's social responsibility manager, and her team started looking at more fuel-efficient alternatives, and discovered the four-cylinder Ford Escape and began replacing the Explorers with Escapes.

By the end of last year, Progressive transitioned approximately 41 percent of its fleet to the four-cylinder models.
