TROY, MI – OnStar by General Motors has announced a new TTY-compatible in-vehicle device that will improve accessibility of OnStar services for deaf, hard of hearing, and speech-impaired subscribers, according to Telematics Update. The OnStar TTY hardware is offered at little or no additional cost through the GM Mobility Reimbursement Program for eligible subscribers. This dealer-installed option is available now on a wide range of 2007-model-year GM vehicles, including the Saturn Relay, Buick Terraza, and Chevrolet Uplander. Most in-vehicle services are available through OnStar TTY, including a link to emergency services, roadside assistance, and access to OnStar’s hands-free calling capability. The system links subscribers to trained TTY advisors at OnStar’s call centers 24/7. The TTY-enabled OnStar system comes equipped with three components — the OnStar Interface Module, a dial pad for making phone calls, and a TTY device. In order to use the OnStar TTY system, the vehicle must be stationary so that drivers are not distracted.
