NTSB Urges Safety Features for 15-Passenger Vans

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) sent a letter to the chief executives of both General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. recommending the automakers research technology to help drivers of 15-passenger vans better control their vehicles, Reuters reported. The letter, sent to Ford chairman William Clay Ford Jr. and GM president Rick Wagoner, is part of the NTSB's effort to improve the safety of 15-passenger vans. The NTSB sent a separate letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) urging that 15-passenger vans be included in the NHTSA’s enhanced rollover rating system. Regulators are developing a new road test to determine a vehicle’s rollover propensity. The new ratings will include cars and light trucks, including SUVs, pickups, and minivans. The NTSB recommended that the manufacturers investigate a range of safety technologies, in-cluding traction-control features, devices that warn drivers when they suddenly leave a traffic lane, and computer systems that can brake individual wheels or adjust power to enhance steering control.
