BISMARCK, ND — The Grand Forks Herald reports that lawmakers have ironed out disagreements over Senator Ray Holmberg's ‘black box’ bill. The bill was introduced to clarify that vehicle owners have control over the information collected by on-board EDRs, as reported by Telematics Update.
The bill's key provisions settled:
Insurance companies cannot force customers to reveal EDR data by threatening to revoke their insurance policies.
Owner’s manuals for cars made on and after 2007 must disclose the presence of the black box, as well as its technical capabilities.
The EDR data belongs to the person who owned the vehicle when the data was collected.
