NICB Says Number of Questionable Auto Insurance Claims Rose in 2012

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) released its annual look at questionable insurance claims in the U.S. over the last three years. The report noted that two types of automotive insurance policies, personal automobile and commercial automobile, were in the top 10 list of questionable claims.
Questionable personal automobile insurance took the top spot, increasing from 69,219 claims in 2011 to 78,024 in 2012. Questionable commercial automobile claims took the number four spot, and increased from 3,092 in 2011 to 3,554 in 2012.
By policy type and loss type, personal automobile policies for a collision loss type increased dramatically in 2012, going from 10,452 in 2011 to 12,831 in 2012. Next, personal automobile policies with a loss type of personal injury protection increased from 9,343 in 2011 to 10,040 in 2012. Also, the most common referral reason in the U.S. in 2012 was casualty, faked or exaggerated injury, at 18,278 in 2012, up from 17,471 in 2011 (note this is not only from automotive policies but all types).
