The New Jersey state legislature voted on Jan. 13, 2004, to follow California's lead by adopting some of the toughest automobile emissions standards in the country, reports the New York Times. The New Jersey legislation calls on automakers to produce 40,000 gasoline hybrid-electric vehicles and 128,000 low-emission conventional vehicles by 2009. The bill passed by substantial margins in both houses and would essentially mandate that automakers use advanced technology on more vehicles. New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut have passed similar bills.
