New Hampshire Moves Closer to Seatbelt Law for Drivers

New Hampshire’s House Transportation Committee recently voted in favor of a bill that would require adult drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts, reports the New Hampshire Union Leader.
Presently, New Hampshire is the only state in the nation that does not have a law on the books requiring adult drivers and front seat occupants to wear seatbelts. However, there is a regulation that anyone under 18 must use a seatbelt.
Some 70% of New Hampshire drivers say they do wear seatbelts despite the lack of a law as compared with a 90% compliance rate by drivers in other states that mandate it, notes the report.
Proponents of the measure, known as HB 1622, believe it will significantly reduce roadway fatalities. It is estimated that 26 people in New Hampshire would have survived collisions last year had they been wearing seatbelts, according to the report.
Since 1975, seat belts are estimated to have saved 374,276 lives, with 14,955 saved in 2017 alone, according to the National Safety Council.
HB 1622 moves to the full House of Representatives for review next month.
