ATLANTA --- Beginning in 2010, model year vehicles 1986 to 2007 are required to meet emission testing standards in Georgia. Georgia's Clean Air Force (GCAF) has announced its guidelines for the 2010 Enhanced Vehicle Emission Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) Program.  

Model year vehicles 2008 and newer are exempt because of their low level of emissions. Other exempt vehicles include diesels, alternate fuel vehicles that do not operate on gasoline, motorcycles and motor homes. 

Since 1996 Georgia's Clean Air Force (GCAF), the state's Enhanced Vehicle Emission Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) Program, has worked with Georgia's Environmental Protection Division to reduce harmful vehicle emissions.  

In addition to the model year vehicle updates, the repair waiver limit amount will increase to $788 in 2010 to reflect annual changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).  

GCAF offers a repair waiver to motorists who fail their emission inspection after completing emission-related repairs in excess of $788 if certain requirements are met, as outlined at www.cleanairforce.com.   

Motorists also can visit GCAF's Web site or an emission inspection station to view the RepairWatch Public Report, which provides a list of reputable repair facilities to assist with emission-related repairs. 

A vehicle may be tested well in advance of a motorist's registration renewal date. GCAF recommends testing a vehicle at least four to six weeks prior to the registration renewal date to allow time for emission-related repairs, if needed. 

According to Georgia law, a vehicle must be sold with a current, valid and passing Georgia Vehicle Emission Inspection Report (VIR) if the buyer is going to register the vehicle in a Georgia county requiring emission testing.
