Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Named Top Safety Pick

The 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross compact SUV has earned a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety when it's equipped with optional crash prevention and outfitted with specific headlights.
Making its debut for the 2018 model year, the Eclipse Cross was derived from the larger Outlander. The 2019 Outlander previously earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick award.
The Eclipse Cross performed well in all six IIHS crashworthiness evaluations. Specifically, the SUV captured good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraint, and passenger-side small overlap front tests.
But to earn Top Safety status, vehicles must also score an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention as well as a good or acceptable headlight rating.
The Eclipse Cross delivered on both counts. Its front crash prevention system, which is an optional feature, rates superior according to IIHS. In track tests, the Eclipse Cross avoided collisions at 12 and 25 mph.
Moreover, the small SUV earns an acceptable rating for its available LED headlights, which come with the SEL trim—giving it the final credential needed for Top Safety Pick. However, a good headlight rating would have boosted the SUV to IIHS’s higher-tier Top Safety Pick+ award.
